Elaine "Shugg" Whitaker REALTOR®

Getting hooked on Hatteras Island was so easy to do. In our early years of marriage, my husband, Rom, and I bought a fishing shack with a better-than-average workshop located on NC Hwy. 12, right across from the Frisco Pier. We quickly became weekend warriors chasing any and everything the Gulf Stream had to offer aboard a 25-foot Sea Craft. Our weekends were jammed packed with two full days of fishing, and we often left early, early Monday morning so we could get our beginning-of-the week job responsibilities started off om the right foot. After three years of back-and-forth traveling and a hit-and-miss attendance record on weekend social events, we decided to throw in the towel and make Hatteras our permanent home.

We literally have been happy as a clams ever since. Rom works 'round the clock as owner/operator of the charter boat Release. I was fortunate enough to be hired as a Career and Technical Education Teacher with Cape Hatteras Secondary School for the past 31 years. What a privilege to teach and serve generations of our island young'uns! As an avid Hurricane Sports fan, I spent countless years serving as a CHSS Booster Club member as well as connecting with our local community as a member of the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation and the local Kiwanis Club.

Rom and I have been blessed to raise our two sons, now adults, Rom IV, affectionately known as Lil' Rom even though he's 6' 2", and Cameron. Growing up with the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean as neighbors, our boys spent countless hours on the water fishing and hunting. To this day, both of our young men remain smitten with this place and are pursuing their own entrepreneurial gigs. I guess it's no surprise that they have chosen to come back to their hometown roots.

The simple pleasures of watching incredible sunsets from my front porch, waking to the sounds of the offshore fleet heading to the fishing grounds, relishing the joys of a bike ride or boat ride to dinner on the town in Hatteras Village, hearing the distinguishable cry of a seagull, enjoying a quick paddleboard ride on short notice and connecting with neighbors make my heart smile and remind me that living here is as good as it gets. It's a simple quality of life that isn't duplicated but easily continues to tug at the heartstrings. The ability to roll over to vacation mode when family and friends come to town is second to none. The island abounds with activities including fine dining, a thriving arts community, volunteer and wellness opportunities as well as unlimited water sports.

Now I'm excited to start my real estate career and continue to share my love for this place I call home from "Bridge to Ferry...and beyond." I am committed to offering a trustworthy, honest, dependable, hard-working, common-sense approach to your real estate needs. My job is simply to make certain that you have all the information you need to make informed and confident decisions. Please feel free to call me Shugg; my family and friends do.
