Getting hooked on Hatteras Island was so easy to do. In our early years of marriage, my husband, Rom, and I bought a fishing shack with a better-than-average workshop located on NC Hwy. 12, right across from the Frisco Pier. We quickly became weekend warriors chasing any and everything the Gulf Stream had to offer aboard a 25-foot Sea Craft. Our weekends were jammed packed with two full days of fishing, and we often left early, early Monday morning so we could get our beginning-of-the week job responsibilities started off on the right foot. After three years of back-and-forth traveling and a hit-and-miss attendance record on weekend social events, we decided to throw in the towel and make Hatteras our permanent home.

We literally have been happy as a clams ever since. Rom works 'round the clock as owner/operator of the charter boat Release. I was fortunate enough to enjoy a rewarding career as a Teacher and Special Populations Coordinator with Cape Hatteras Secondary School for over 30 years. What a privilege to teach and serve generations of our island young'uns!

Rom and I have been blessed to raise our two sons, now adults, Rom IV, affectionately known as Lil' Rom even though he's 6' 2", and Cameron. Growing up with the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean as neighbors, our boys spent countless hours on the water fishing and hunting. I guess it's no surprise that they have chosen to come back to their hometown roots.  Rom, the son, has his own inshore charter fishing business, Sound Bound Charters.  Cameron is a fireman with Duck Village Fire Department and also has an inshore charter fishing business, Tradition Fishing.  In December and January he provides guided tours for duck hunters.

My real estate career allows me to share my love for this place I call home from "Bridge to Ferry...and beyond." I am committed to offering a trustworthy, honest, dependable, hard-working, common-sense approach to your real estate needs. My job is simply to make certain that you have all the information you need to make informed and confident decisions. Please feel free to call me Shugg; my family and friends do.

Client Testimonials

"It is our pleasure to recommend Elaine Whitaker as a real estate agent for any individual or family searching for the ideal home or building lot for their individual situation. We were in a unique situation as we live over four hours from the lot that struck our interest and had to rely not only on her professional skills but also for her to relay her knowledge of the locale.

Elaine and her agency formulated a deal that was good for us and made the seller happy as well. Throughout this lot buying process, we were in constant communication with the agency and never once felt compromised by not being in close proximity to the perspective property.

We found Elaine to be a highly attentive agent, almost as if we were her only customers, although we know that was not the case. She returned all phone calls and emails in a timely manner. She is also highly personable with an engaging personality. As first time vacant lot buyers, Elaine guided us through the somewhat intimidating process of county certificates, surveys and other applications.

We are please to recommend Elaine Whitaker to anyone looking to buy or sell a home or building lot. If we ever need the services of a Realtor, she will be our first choice. If you want to discuss our experience in more detail please feel free to contact us...919-971-5221 or by email irgrapeman@aol.com"
